So you’ve booked your session — exciting! Whether it’s maternity, family portraits, senior photos, or a birthday milestone, planning ahead can make all the difference.
As a professional McAllen photographer, I’ve worked with hundreds of amazing clients across the Rio Grande Valley — and I’ve seen the same little things sneak up on people right before their shoot. Don’t worry — I’ve got you covered.
Here are the top 5 things people tend to forget before their session, plus some helpful prep tips to keep your shoot stress-free and stunning.
1️⃣ Outfit Prep: Steam, Iron, & Backup Options
What’s often forgotten: People bring beautiful outfits… straight out of the bag.
Quick Fix: Make sure everything is steamed or ironed before your session. Wrinkles show in photos more than you think — especially with solid colors and satins. If you’re wearing layers or gowns, bring a backup in case of spills or discomfort. And yes, shoes matter too!
2️⃣ Grooming & Beauty Details
What’s often forgotten: Nails, brows, hair touch-ups, or basic grooming for the guys.
Quick Fix: Clean, neutral nails (or a fresh polish) make a huge difference. If you’re doing your own hair and makeup, give yourself plenty of time. I always recommend professional hair and makeup for a polished look — especially for maternity, senior, or branding sessions.
And don’t forget chapstick — dry lips are hard to edit!
3️⃣ Rest & Hydration the Night Before
What’s often forgotten: Skipping water or sleep before a shoot.
Quick Fix: Hydrated skin glows naturally, and a good night’s sleep helps reduce puffiness and dark circles. Aim to drink extra water the day before and get a full night’s rest. If you’re doing a sunrise or golden hour shoot, try to avoid alcohol the night before — it shows!
4️⃣ Undergarments That Match the Outfit
What’s often forgotten: The wrong bra or visible underwear lines.
Quick Fix: Make sure your undergarments work with your outfits. Strapless bras, seamless options, or shape wear can make certain outfits look more polished. This is especially important for fitted dresses, off-shoulder gowns, or white fabrics.
5️⃣ Communicating Your Vision
What’s often forgotten: Telling your photographer what you want.
Quick Fix: I always encourage my clients to send inspo photos, describe the vibe they’re going for, or let me know any “must-have” shots. This helps me plan the lighting, poses, and flow of your shoot. Whether you want soft and dreamy or bold and powerful — I’ve got you.
And remember: I provide over 100 backdrops and 60+ gowns, so let’s get creative!
